Vancouver's Hastings Street was named in 1885 for Rear-Admiral George Fowler Hastings of the Royal Navy. It's eastern reaches defy the "skid row" pejorative to constantly reinvent itself.
This scene represented to me the struggles of the Downtown Eastside (and perhaps small business in general) to adapt to the headlong rush of modernity.
